Hardy Cemetery: Historic Section
Located in Hardy, Sharp County, Arkansas

 (Arkansas, Fifth Principal Meridian, T19N, R5W, Sec 11), adjacent to the railroad and Spring River, is located on the south side of Main Street at the eastern edge of the Hardy Downtown Historic District (National Register of Historic Places - District - #95001121) between Kelly Street on the West and Cope Avenue on the East.

The Hardy Cemetery Historic Section is the burial site of many early settlers of Hardy, including many of the town founders. The town of Hardy was founded in 1883 due to the coming of the Railroad. There are 322 marked graves in the Historic Section of which 184 are historic burials.

The first known burial is that of  William C. Adams (b. 1/5/1819 d. 5/22/1888).

There are at least 11 of the 37 town founders buried in the Historic Section of Hardy Cemetery and descendents of at least 18 of the original town founders also buried in the cemetery. Buried in this section are many of the original town founders, landowners and business people as well as many of their mothers, fathers, siblings and descendents. Some of these family’s descendents are still living in Hardy today.

TOWN FOUNDERS BURIED AT HARDY CEMETERY HISTORIC SECTION:

WILLIAM L. BIGGERS:  Born 09/02/1860 Died 3/22/1898 son of  Elizabeth Thomas Bigger (1839-). Brother of Robert S. Biggers and Dock Christopher. William married Mollie Cope and they had three children: Audi, Vada and Preston.

WALKER CLAYTON:  Born in March 5, 1853 in DeKalb County, Alabama, son of Daniel C. and Margaret (Nicholson) Clayton, is considered the original town founder of Hardy and is the first one listed on the Town’s Incorporation papers filed in 1894. He was a large landowner and donated the land for the formation of the town of Hardy as well as the Hardy Cemetery. At the age of 8, about 1860 the family had moved to Ash Flat, Sharp County, Arkansas.  In 1880, Walker Clayton, occupation “druggist”, lived in Richwoods, Sharp County, Arkansas.as head of household, living with his mother and younger brother William. He married Sarah L. Cope October, 17, 1880, daughter of William Ammon Cope* (1827-1907) and town founder Hannah Jordan Estes* (1837-1905).  He moved from Ash Flat to the Hardy area about 1883 when he saw a great business opportunity with the coming of the new Kansas City- Springfield & Memphis Railroad through the area. By 1900, Walker, occupation “merchant” had five children lived in Hardy, Sharp County, Arkansas. Between 1885 and 1891, Walker had purchased 373.10 acres of property in 9 separate real estate transactions. Sharp County’s first bank opened in Hardy in 1895 with Walker Clayton as president.  By 1910, his occupation was selling real estate according to the 1910 census. He died November 8, 1918.

Wife of William A. Cope, was born 08/10/1837- 1905 in Tennessee.

JOHN L. EADY ( 8/29/1867 – 4/27/1903) married to D. T. Eady born March 1871 in Arkansas. Occupation 1900 - Merchant.

 ANDREW P. JOHN Born May 1857 in Illinois Died - November 1 1926. His occupation in 1900 Hardy, Arkansas was Barber.  He was married to M.E. John born Sept. 1865 in Arkansas.

THOMAS HAYDEN MCCALEB  Born 2/14/1859 Died 9/23/1942. He took the 1900 Census for Hardy. He was a Notary Public.

 DR. WILL L. MCGAVIC  Born 09/28/1864 in Iowa. Died 02/19/1908 Occupation 1900 Physician. Wife Maggie b. 1875 Kentucky  and Son Ernest.b. Sept 1881 Arkansas

L.K. MCGINNIS Town Founder Born Apr. 6 1855 Died Aug 10, 1896 married to F. B. McGinnis born Dec. 1861 in Arkansas 

WALTER P. VANATTA Town Founder 10/09/1868 - 05/01/1896 married to Ida A. (Beck) Vannatta Nov. 27, 1893 In Sharp County, Arkansas


 W. S. VANNATTA  Born 12/12/1831 Died 10/09/1916, Married to Mrs. C. C. Taylor on Sept. 9, 1900 In Sharp County. His Occupation 1900 Merchant 

 JOHN W. WALSH Born 9/22/1868 in Tennessee died 1/16/1940. His occupation in Hardy in 1930 was Meat Merchant. He was married to Laura L. Walsh born in Arkansas (11/9/1873-8/27/1953)

Jackson and James West although descendants of some of these founders are buried here.
